First love. 28.6.2018

Updated: Mar 10, 2020

Mr and Mrs Mather, our first ever couple to say 'I do' here at Low Hall The Lakes and oh boy what a first wedding it was.

From the glorious weather, to the bohemian goddess that was JJ with her bridesmaids and flowers that reflected the skies, to the team of dapper groomsmen led by the dapper Joe. The food was divine, the dancing was bold and the party went off to sweet soul sounds that started in the ceremony.

This was where our weddings all began in 2018, most things weren't finished, our loos never existed and downstairs in the Lovable Old Barn was a no go zone, but good golly was it a cracker.

Before I go into more details – a bit of background for you. Groom Joe is one of my favourite photographers. He's shot a ridiculous amount of weddings, meaning he knows what works and what doesn't and the sort of day that would sum him and bride-to-be Jen up perfectly. Secondly, Joe's my big bro. So no pressure.

Just before we got the keys to Low Hall in October '18, Joe and Jenny asked if they could have the first wedding in The Lovable Old Barn. It wasn't just Ben and I that had fallen head over heels with the magic at the bottom of the lane but the whole darn crew. After a lot of debating on whether we could actually pull it off and a whole lot of papping our pants, we said 'yes'. The date was set; June 28th 2018. We didn't have a clue what we were doing, we didn't even know whether we'd get planning permission for change of use on the barn, let alone how to apply for it and there was a shit load of work ahead of us. Well thank god we said 'yes', we got planning, shit got done and there was a whole lot of squeaky bum time in between. Most things all came together in the last month, or week. The beautiful wooden stairs went in (if you're in need of a joiner Jim Scott Joinery is the bomb!), our homemade bar was built, staff/pals were recruited, beer was delivered and porter loos were imported.

June 28th 2018, the most scorching beautiful day, possibly ever in the Lake District. It was a sizzler.

Countryside boho, rustic relaxed and a mother of all parties was the laid-back order of the day. They had their heart set on a good pal Louie hosting an informal ceremony outside, so they had a very small and beautifully intimate wedding in the library in the morning with the super folk at Cumbrian Registrars. Jen wore a gorgeous yellow dress and saved her mega dress for later.

Officially Mr and Mrs Mather. Joe headed out to greet, Jen got changed as did I as a bridesmaid, Ben served our first ever punter and Louie got cloaked up, as the very special celebrant, with cocktail in hand no less. Jen looked like an actual, real-life bohemian goddess and Joe looked pretty damn dapper too.

Complete with personalised vows, Louie-isms, a pal playing the guitar and lots of fantastic singing out of tune, it was ridiculously wonderful – totally barmy and utterly beautiful. Much like Joe and Jen. (If you're reading and you know them, I bet you're nodding your head.)

Reception drinks, garden games and some damn fine canapés followed to the sounds of funky house tooted out of a sax.

The Mathers were welcomed upstairs in the Lovable Old Barn for a feast of speeches, Mediterranean style deliciousness and partying, hosted by a 'wedding singer'. I won't lie I was dubious about the wedding singer and expected a dodgy Adam Sandler look alike with an even dodgier mullet to appear. But my god he was epic. Before the starters we were dancing on chairs and doing the conga around the barn. All of the stress of the last few months was dissolved in that one moment of seeing the barn bouncing so full of life, love and utter happiness.

The night party crew arrived and a raucous evening do let loose with an awesome band and bat shit crazy moves from every groover in there.

And the party didn't stop the next day, with Ben in particular letting his hair down.

I shall say no more.

Mr and Mrs Mather, thank you for being our first and christening the Lovable Old Barn with so much love and wonderful joy. You're both barmy and beautiful and we love you lots xx
